This is a popular question that we have been asked as we tell people that we quit our jobs to travel the world. Personally, we have read several travel blogs wondering the same thing. There seems to be a majority of people who have chosen to sell or give away all or most of their belongings.
We are different; we basically kept everything.
This was not necessarily our original intention, but it is what we did.
We think most of us would say that we have good intentions when we set out to get things done; however, we think that most of us would also say that life often times has other plans. This was definitely the case when it came to our moving process!
Originally, we had decided to go through our belonging and keep furniture, sentimental items, and other things we felt like we wanted to have for whenever we decide to come back from our odyssey. The rest of our belongings would be donated or possibly sold for extra travel money.
In reality:
We will be upfront and let everyone know that we are procrastinators. And as time would have it we found ourselves a week out from our departure date and not one item had been boxed for storage or anything ready to be donated or sold. So, we did what any well practiced procrastinator does! Just start getting things done a lot more quickly than first intended! Everything began being placed in boxes to be placed in our storage unit.
When moving day finally rolled around things still were not completely packed and ready to be moved. Luckily, we have some great friends and family (you all know who you are!) that came to help out! We were running behind and did not even pick up our moving truck until 3 p.m. There was an issue with the moving truck pick up; however, the company was helpful with sorting that out.
So, we have help, a moving truck, and a mostly boxed up apartment so things should be good to go right? Wrong.
Our first flight for this trip was set to leave at 6 a.m. and at midnight we were finishing the jigsaw puzzle game at the storage unit and still needed to pack our backpacks with everything that we wanted to have for our travels. The stress was getting to us a bit and our help was dwindling away as they all had to work in the morning. At this point we decided to lose out on our non-refundable tickets that were already purchased and re-book our flights for a day later. This gave us a sigh of relief but still so many things to get done.
Roughly twenty-four hours later we still had a few odds and ends to move out of our apartment but thanks to a wonderful family member who agreed to complete all the final touches we were ready…. well as ready as we were ever going to be….
Off to the airport for the odyssey to begin!
Stay tuned!
